Conflict Looming in Middle East as Delegations Debate Intervention in Kuwait

With Saddam Hussein’s recent invasion of Kuwait, a committee composed of government and military officials of various nations including the USA, Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia among others has gathered to discuss how to move forward should Hussein hold out past the previously announced midnight deadline.

Talks covered many topics including the exploration of military coalitions, diplomacy and considerations of humanitarian aid. Proposed by a Syrian military official, discussions have been pushing for a NATO-Arab coalition gathering various neighboring nations that have spoken out against Hussein. Many diplomats commented on the violation of international law in order to push for direct military intervention.

Other diplomats who were opposed to military intervention proposed diplomatic measures in order to placate the Iraqi leader and to return Kuwait its previous state as a sovereign nation.

Diplomatic and administrative delays have slowed negotiations, and a solution has not yet been reached. Given the turbulent nature of the situation and the rapidly approaching deadline, diplomatic solutions are unlikely to come to fruition.
