THE GULF WAR UNSC LIVE UPDATES: DIVIDED REACTION TO MOTION
In the first committee session, the United Nations Security Council moderate caucus proposed the motion of the State of Iraq and Kuwait was passed. Specifically refers to the dispute between Iraq and Kuwait about Kuwait’s sovereignty and its territorial rights.
The Commander of the United States, Lieutenant Henry Emerson called for cutting off the supply routes to Iraq and maintaining the tranquillity of the Gulf’s sea zone. Margaret Thatcher - the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom explicitly stated that the invasion of Kuwait committed by Iraq will be met with heavy retaliation. Ms. Thatcher strongly opposed Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait. Egypt’s Minister of Defence and Commander in Chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces - Youssef Sabri Abu Taleb calls for the protection of Kuwait and will lead its military forces to protect Kuwait’s autonomy if necessary.
In contrast, more humanitarian approaches were proposed, with the United States’ President George Bush strongly advocating for the development of a diplomatic agreement between Iraq and Kuwait and opposed the idea of proceeding toward an armed conflict. Similarly, Mr. François Mitterrand - the president of the French Republic is not seeking a war and the French president prioritizes expressing the urgent need to stop the war first and finding solutions to the conflicts later.
At the time, the UNSC delegates were divided about their attitude about how to proceed forward with the motions with half encouraging a rapid decision and in support of a war while the other half were in support of a more diplomatic approach toward the conflict
