What is RENEW and why is it important?
This morning, the UNEP voted to start debate on expanding developing countries' access to clean energy. The Delegation of the United States proposed an initiative to collaborate with multiple nations, including the delegation of France, to assist developing countries in their respective environmental programs. The proposal, given the name “RENEW”, is centered around investing more in the international effort of reducing the global carbon footprint, by streamlining bureaucratic processes, and by investing more in renewable energy.
According to the delegation of Vietnam, this proposed resolution is significant as it would allow many rural and impoverished areas to gain access to basic human necessities, such as electricity and running water.
Many countries, including the delegation of Iran, have commented that even though oil is a necessity for their economy to exist, they would be willing to compromise for the good of our environment and our planet. This comes very unexpectedly, as US - Iran relations are at an all time low due to the corrupt Iranian regime, and the proposed resolution has been proposed by the US.
Fox News also talked to the delegation of China about this topic, and received almost no response; the delegate of China simply said they did not care for what the US did.
